Scooters, Scooters and did I mention, Scooters?
Just like with cars, the number of scooters available on the open market – it is overwhelming. You’ve got 3-wheel scooter, 4-wheel scooters, travel scooters, full size scooters, scooter that break down and those that don’t, base model scooters and scooter that come with everything including a charging port. The options are limitless, the applications countless and affordable at any budget.
My personal favorite because they are diverse in their applications are the travel scooters, specifically the Pride Mobility GO-GO series. Available in both 3-wheels and 4-wheels, in red and blue, with a weight capacity of 300 pounds, the GO-GO breaks down into 3 light weight pieces that fit into the rear of just about any vehicle. They are swift, easily maneuverable, have a long battery life and can be used inside and outside. There are a few downsides though, firstly, you are very restricted to the distances a charge will get you, on average, with a standard battery pack you’ll only get about 8 miles, whereas will the extended battery pack you’ll get about 12 miles. Your speed will also be restricted to a maximum of 4 MPH and there are no options for upgrades on the seating. Bonus, the GO-GO is affordable, retailing between $1200-$1600 depending on the model.
The full-size scooters, while still available in 3-wheel and 4-wheel, red or blue, with a 350-pound weight capacity have an overall weight about double that of a travel scooter, making transportation further into the community, more difficult. In order to transport the scooter from one place to another, a vehicle lift is typically required. Full-sized scooters can be used for both inside and outside activities, keep in mind that the width on a full-size scooter is a little over 22 inches so it does have difficulties getting through doorways on older homes. While there are a few downsides to the full-sized scooter, there are several benefits; its roughly 1.6 miles per hour faster than the travel scooter, there is a larger clearance between the ground and the bottom of the scooter, and you can go almost double the distance. Bonus, full-sized scooters offer you the option to customize certain features such as the style of the seat. If you are looking for a full-sized scooter, I would recommend the Pride Mobility Victory 10 or the Golden Technologies Golden Companion series.
Within the travel and full-sized scooter there are several other options besides the ones listed above, those are simply the most popular options out there. If you are looking at a specific model not listed above and have some questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to helping you regain your independence through mobility.
